Discover Ios

Ios is a Cyclades island in the southern Aegean Sea, famous for combining a busy nightlife scene in Chora with sandy beaches like Mylopotas. Reached by a 3.5-hour high-speed ferry from Athens, it's a popular spot for travelers from all over Europe.

Ios is famous for its lively Cycladic nightlife, a warm island where golden sand stretches below a hilltop Chora that wakes up after dark. But seeing Ios only as a party spot means missing what makes it truly special. This is a place with thousands of years of history. You'll find the legendary tomb of Homer on a northern hill, and one of the prettiest whitewashed villages in Greece.

The island's small size makes it easy to explore. Mylopotas, one of the longest sandy beaches in the Cyclades, sits directly below Chora's whitewashed houses. Further south, the remote coast hides Manganari, a series of calm, turquoise bays with incredibly clear water. Old windmills sit on the hills, blue-domed churches mark the pathways, and the local light has drawn artists here for decades.

Lately, Ios has quietly broadened its appeal. Boutique hotels, local farm-to-table restaurants, and quiet retreats have joined the classic clubs and beach bars. The island now fits almost any travel style. It's just as good for couples looking for sunset drinks as it is for families who want safe, shallow waters.

On Ios, the sun sets slowly, the music starts up, and the sea carries all the island's secrets.

Expert Recommendation

"For the first-time visitor, staying in the main Chora provides the best balance of accessibility and atmosphere."

From Homer to the Modern Age

Homer's Final Rest

Ancient traditions say the great poet Homer died and was buried on Ios, which was the home of his mother Clymene. His tomb sits at Plakoto on the northern tip of the island and has drawn travelers since ancient times. A Dutch archaeologist named Pasch van Krienen claimed to have found the grave here in 1771.

Ancient & Byzantine Ios

People have lived on Ios since at least 3000 BC. The island prospered during Classical times and even minted its own coins with Homer's face on them. Later, during the Byzantine era, residents built the hilltop Paleokastro fortress to defend against pirate raids.

Venetian & Ottoman Rule

Like most islands in the Cyclades, Ios was ruled by Venice from the 13th century as part of the Duchy of Naxos. Chora was fortified during this time. The subsequent Ottoman rule was light, allowing the islanders to preserve their Greek Orthodox traditions.

The Island Reborn

Ios became famous in the 1960s when backpackers and hippies fell in love with its cheap rooms and beautiful beaches. That bohemian atmosphere eventually grew into a massive summer party scene. Recently, the island has balanced this out by adding more luxury hotels and sustainable cultural options.

Essential Travel Tips

Insider tips for your Ios trip

Ios — 2026 Updates

New
  • 🆕EU Entry/Exit System (EES) launched April 2026. Non-EU travelers need biometric registration at first Schengen entry.
  • 💰Climate Crisis Resilience Fee: €2–€15/night depending on hotel star rating, collected directly at the property.
  • 🚢A major €11.4M port upgrade is underway to improve facilities for ferry travelers.
  • 🏛️ The island is shifting toward sustainable tourism, promoting historical sites like Skarkos alongside its nightlife.

Transport

  • •Buses run frequently between Ormos port, Chora, and Mylopotas every 15 to 20 minutes in summer.
  • •We recommend renting an ATV or car to reach remote south coast beaches like Manganari.
  • •Water taxis run from the port to Manganari in high season.
  • •The walk from the port to Chora takes about 15 minutes uphill along a paved path.
  • •All major ferries dock at Ormos port, from which you can easily catch a bus or taxi.

Money & Booking

  • •You'll find ATMs in Chora and Ormos, but they can run out of cash in August. It's smart to carry backup cash.
  • •Most hotels and restaurants accept cards, but carry some cash for small kiosks and beach beds.
  • •Expect to spend €70 to €120 per day, though nightlife can make costs add up quickly.
  • •Ios offers much better value than Mykonos or Santorini, especially for hotel rooms.
  • •We recommend booking your summer stay 4 to 6 months in advance as rooms sell out early.

Health & Safety

  • •There's a medical center in Chora. The closest hospital is on Santorini or Naxos.
  • •Stay hydrated in the summer. Always carry plenty of water when hiking or exploring.
  • •Apply sunscreen regularly. The sun is intense, especially on reflective sandy beaches.
  • •Some remote beaches don't have umbrellas or shade, so bring your own or plan around the midday heat.
  • •The meltemi winds in July and August cool the air but increase the risk of sunburn.

Culture & Etiquette

  • •Ios is welcoming to all ages. Families will find plenty of quiet areas to enjoy.
  • •Please respect local quiet hours (2 to 5 PM) when walking through residential parts of Chora.
  • •Dress respectfully when entering churches. The island has dozens of tiny chapels.
  • •Try learning a few basic Greek words. Locals appreciate the effort.
  • •The island has deep historical roots. Asking about Homer's burial site always pleases the locals.
