Last updated: May 17, 2026 · The insider's alternative to Mykonos and Santorini

If you're looking for the real Greek islands without the Mykonos or Santorini price tag, these three Cyclades islands are your best bet. They're close to each other, but they have completely different personalities. Here's our breakdown of how they compare.

🏖️ Beaches

Naxos offers some of the best beaches in Greece. The island's west coast is a continuous line of golden sand. Plaka beach stretches for over 4 kilometers and is backed by sand dunes and cedar trees. The water here is shallow, calm, and perfect for families. It's not as wild or varied as Milos, but the sand quality is consistently top-tier.

Paros gives you the most variety in a small package. You'll find the strange, wind-sculpted granite blocks of Kolymbithres, the turquoise swimming bays of Santa Maria, and the windy shores of Golden Beach, which is a paradise for windsurfers. Every bay has its own distinct character.

Milos is in a volcanic category of its own. The island has over 80 beaches, and many look like they belong on another planet. Sarakiniko features smooth, lunar-white volcanic rock that drops into deep blue water. Tsigrado requires you to climb down a wooden ladder in a narrow cliff crevice to reach the sand. At Kleftiko, you'll need to book a boat tour or day trip to explore the towering white sea caves that pirates once used for shelter.

Winner: Milos wins for dramatic scenery, Naxos for pure sand quality, and Paros for variety.

🍽️ Food & Culture

Naxos is a self-sufficient farming powerhouse. Because it doesn't rely solely on tourism, the local Greek food here is outstanding. You'll taste traditional graviera cheese, sweet local potatoes, and lamb slow-cooked in mountain tavernas. The Tragea valley is incredibly fertile, producing olives, grapes, and citrus fruits like Citron, which they turn into a local sweet liqueur.

Paros has a much more modern dining and social scene. It's famous for its late night cocktail bars, creative seafood spots, and boutique wineries. Moraitis Winery, located just behind Naoussa, produces excellent Cycladic wines. If you're looking for stylish tavernas and high-end dining near the water, Paros is the clear choice.

Milos keeps things simple and rustic. You won't find many fancy restaurants here. Instead, you'll eat fresh fish and local specialities like pitarakia (small cheese pies made with wild herbs) at family-run tables. The seaside taverna O! Hamos! in Adamas is a local legend that you shouldn't miss.

Winner: Naxos for authentic Greek food and village culture; Paros for trendy dining.

💰 Value

All three of these islands offer much better value than Santorini or Mykonos. You'll generally save about 40% to 60% on your hotel stay and around 30% on dinner bills.

Budget ranking (cheapest first): Naxos, then Milos, and Paros as the most expensive.

The Ideal Combo

If you're planning an island hopping trip and have 7 to 10 days, we highly recommend combining these islands. The local ferry system makes it incredibly easy:

  • Paros + Naxos (a quick 25-minute ferry ride): Excellent for travelers who want a mix of nightlife, long sandy beaches, and authentic food. A 7-day trip works perfectly.
  • Paros + Milos (a 2.5-hour ferry ride): Gives you the perfect contrast between cosmopolitan towns and wild, volcanic landscapes. We suggest an 8-day trip.
  • Naxos + Milos (a 3-hour ferry ride): Best for nature lovers who want to combine massive sandy beaches with dramatic volcanic cliffs. Plan for 8 days.
  • The Trio: If you have 10 days or more, you can easily visit all three. It's the ultimate way to experience the best of the Cyclades islands.
